Susan -Computer Tutorial vs Human Tutorial - Revised

Affordances of Computer Tutorials:

  • Computer Tutorials allow for self-contained, self –paced instruction, geared to the needs of the learner
  • Directed delivery of instruction
  • Can be expanded through available links to internet
  • Computer tutorials provided drill and practice that are helpful in preparing for tests or mastering a skill
  • Practice sessions are automatically geared to the learner’s needs
  • Immediate feedback is provided
  • Computer tutorials can be adapted for special needs
  • Some programs allow learners to be redirected along alternate paths depending on how much they respond to questions or whether or not they show mastery
  • Programs available for reading, math, history, geography, art, music – virtually all subjects

Human Tutors

  • One to one feedback – explanation available in several different ways to best fit the student’s style of learning
  • Is usually more constructivist in nature, allowing student to build their own knowledge
  • Can be expanded through available links to internet, as well as other resources NOT on the computer
  • Sessions automatically geared to the learner’s needs
  • Immediate feedback is provided
  • Requires time and availability of a human tutor

Examples of Computer Tutorial learning activities

Drill and Practice

Allows learners to work problems and answer questions

Example:
Jumpstart Second Grade Math
Spanish Before You Know It
Students can practice basic math facts, phonics, etc.

Tutorial

Acts like a human tutor by providing all the information and instructional activities a learner needs to master a topic: information summaries explanation practice routines, feedback, and assessment

Example: Color, Contrast, and Dimension in News Design

Students can read information and then test knowledge by answering questions. Feedback will guide future practice routes

Simulation

Models real or imaginary systems to show how those systems or similar ones work to demonstrate underlying concepts.

Example: The Digital Frog Dissection

Students can experience digitally things like driving a car, dissecting an animal

Instructional Games

Increases motivation by adding game rules to drills and simulations

Example:

Arthur’s Math Games
Students play games that increase learning. Much like drill and practice, but more fun.

Problem Solving

Teaches directly (through explanations and/or practice) the steps involved in solving problems or helps the learner acquire problem-solving skills by giving them opportunities to solve problems

Thinkin’ Things

Students can read materials, practice through a series of exercises and solve problems.

Examples of Activites to do with a Human Tutor

Drill and Practice

Students can practice skills such as reading orally, handwriting, math facts, etc.

Tutorial
A tutor can individualize instruction to the needs of the student, provide instant feedback and encouragement.

Simulation
Students can work with models along with the help of a tutor to guide them

Instructional Games
Games such as scrabble to build spelling skills, solving puzzles, math games that reinforce skills, strategy building games such as Mancala, and games that present students with opportunities to build and reinforce skills make learning more fun. When playing with a human tutor, the student is more likely to be held accountable for mistakes and be afforded the opportunity to understand them and learn from them.

Problem Solving
Students may be given real life situations within which to solve problems. This helps them make connections between their learning and their real life which gives validity to the lesson.
