Service Learning
In Service-Learning, students are involved in activities that have a positive impact on the community , hence the word "service". The experience is tied to both personal and academic development. However, Service-Learning is different from internship or volunteer work. It is intended to benefit both the students providing the service, and the community receiving the service with great focus on the learning that occurs while service is provided. One of the primary outcome is the learning of civic responsibility for students.
I believe UAB is starting to encourage faculty to implement Service-Learning when feasible and appropriate.
